In her 23 years of life, Grace Throckmorton was a force – and a voice – for all animals.
Here at Pasado’s Safe Haven, we have witnessed inspirational acts of kindness, generosity, and love for the animals. But we are astounded by the kind of love that transcends death itself. Grace Throckmorton was only on the earth for 23 years, but during that time, she selflessly devoted her life to animals. Shortly after Grace passed away, Pasado’s was notified that donations would be sent to our sanctuary in honor of Grace’s memory. We have received donations from numerous donors and continue receiving donations to this day. Grace’s enduring legacy will be one of life and love.
From an early age, it was apparent that Grace had a gift. According to Grace’s mother, Cynthia, “Even in preschool, Grace let stick bugs crawl all over her and held boa constrictors. She was never afraid because she had a special intuition with all animals.” Grace came by this intuition naturally. Her grandmother, who passed away last year, loved birds, and she passed this on to Grace. According to Cynthia, “Grace would get hummingbirds and wild birds to sit on her finger. I don’t know how she did it. She just had a way of approaching any animal – insect, bird, reptile, mammal, fish – it didn’t matter. Any of God’s creatures… she had a way with them.”
Here at Pasado’s, we know what it’s like to live for our animals. Grace owned three horses who she loved very much. One of them, SunNee Boy, was her companion since she was 7 years old. She also rescued a gentle, abandoned mare named Talulah. Grace gave Talulah a home – and a chance – when no one else would. And Talulah repaid Grace’s kindness by helping her start her own business. Grace was living her dream of being a horse trainer, working at Devonwood Equestrian Center in Oregon. She had also just received her dream position as the riding coach for the local high school. Grace’s brief flame flickered out this autumn, but she will continue to throw light and warmth on those who need it most.

Grace
passed away in a tragic car accident in December, 2009. While we cannot imagine the grief her family must be experiencing, we are inspired by the
animals that will be saved in Grace's memory. During her brief life, she truly was amazing. According to her mother, “Grace was very sensitive and intuitive. As a child, she had seizures and she didn’t fit in. She was an outcast and she looked to heal herself with the animals. When she rode a horse, she felt good about who she was. Grace remembered how it felt to be left out, and she transformed her childhood pain into an enduring gift, touching the lives of countless children. She loved it when she could show her students the magic of riding – and help them have a sense of place and belonging. She was a beautiful person, and her heart just kept on giving.” And Grace’s giving continues to this day.
