What happened to this tiny kitten, rescued in the knick of time?
Read about her, now in the arms (and bed) of her new moms!

Got a Katrina happy ending that started as a PasadoRescue?

Send it on in!

We'd love to show the world your photos and story!

Before...and After!

Barney (sent by Pit Bulls for Life!) - "In November 2005, Pit Bulls for Life brought 12 pit bulls and pit bull crosses back from the devastation that was left by Hurricane Katrina. Barney, a young pit bull/bulldog mix was one of those dogs - rescued by Pasado's Safe Haven. Despite surviving Hurricane Katrina, severe starvation, a serious case of demodex mange, and a previously healed broken elbow, Barney is still the happiest dog you will ever come to know.

Between doting over his new family and living to play with other dogs and the family cat, Barney sits down to enjoy every moment that he is alive due to the hard work and dedication of the volunteers of Pasados Safe Haven of Seattle who rescued him from the streets of New Orleans, and Pit Bulls for Life who nursed him back to health and found him his forever home."

Scrappy Goes Hollywood!

Scrappy was found by one of our PasadoRescuers when they were searching New Orleans neighborhoods in September. "I heard rustling in the house, " he recalls. "We decided to break in the front door to investigate."

It's a good thing, too. Behind a washer and dryer, they found Scrappy, a scared, skinny dog who'd gone weeks without food. Soon he was on his way to Pasado's triage location. (That's her, above, when she came in. We always took a Polaroid photo to document an incoming animal. That was stapled to their record to aid in tracking.)

Scrappy was flown out to California for Pasado's by Texas oil magnate, T. Boone Pickens. He then found his way to Cesar Millan's doggie psychology "boot camp", featured on the National Geographic Channel's "Dog Whisperer" program. (Scrappy needed a little "mental health" recovery time.) Meantime, his owners needed their own recovery time.

After three long months, Scrappy's beloved owners were found. The show producers planned the reunion in Monroe, Louisiana, where they're living now.

When PasadoRescuers scoured New Orleans for animals, it could have been an out-of-control search and rescue. Too many homes to cover. Too many animals to save. And not enough time.

The key to tracking every animal Pasado's Safe Haven rescued was simple: a laminated card we printed (x hundreds) before we left for the Gulf. One number, hand-written on the card, gave us all the information we needed to reunite owner to animal. Cell phone numbers allowed returning evacuees to find us. It's working everyday. As people return to their homes, or their neighbors return and find our cards, they call us...and miracles happen.

Here are just a few of the thousands of stories of happy reunions!

Once called a "vicious" pitbull, quarantined, and threatened to be killed, "Butter" melts like butter, when he finds his beloved Master.

Butter" was one of the dozens of pitbulls PasadoRescuers saved from homes during Hurricane Katrina. After rescue, and while being microchipped, the vet tech slipped, and he got away. One of our volunteers jumped on him and Butter bit him - out of fear and pain. We knew he was a good boy. But we were forced to "quarantine" him as a "vicious dog". He was here at Pasado's Safe Haven for months, while we tried to find his owner. Our folks here fell in love with him...and then one day the call came. His owner returned home to New Orleans and found our sign on his door, saying we had his dog. Above, Butter was loaded on a flight to New Orleans last week!

Here's the e-mail from our friend in New Orleans who promised to take photos for us. It'll make you cry. It sure did for us!

"Hi PasadoRescuers!:
Butter was not a happy camper when he came off the plane. I asked him if he had a bad flight and he growled at me. LOL. When Kevin (Butter's Master) came in he called Butter from about twenty feet away. Butter could not even see him yet, and yet Butter started to literally do flips in the kennel, landing belly up wagging his tail so hard the crate was rockin". It was a tearfully beautiful site to see. When Butter's Dad came up to the crate with ear to ear smiles and tears in his eyes it was one of those things that restores your faith in humanity. Kevin was so gracious and laughing and crying at the same time. He just couldn't believe he finally had his boy back. I asked him why he named him Butter and he said because when he was a baby, he would pet him and he was as soft as butter so he named him that. When Dad took him out of the crate, Butter went beserk literally, jumping all over him, rolling on the ground, running in circles. It was heartwarming to see. Wish you all could have been there to share it with us. This is the happy end result of all your hard work to save our animals.

God is looking down on you all, and sees all the selfless work and
back-breaking work you do to save his creatures and our animal companions.

Kudos Pasado's !!!!

Pics are attached. Share them with the world, we all need a little joy in our lives.

Nikki the Wonder Cat!

"On August 29, 2005 the 10 ft. flood waters of Katrina entered my New Orleans home and destroyed everything my family and I have ever worked for. It took the lives of my dog Polo, and my cat Christian. My tortoise Nikki was unaccounted for. She was my indoor cat that I had taken in my home as a baby about a year and a half ago, after a friend of mine found her abandoned at a boat launch. She was a tiny kitten very starved for attention. When we evacuated for Katrina, never did we think that it would be our last time seeing our home. We thought we were protecting our animals by leaving them in the house with lots of food and water. Little did we know things would never be the same again. I made desperate attempts to have my animals rescued and I prayed someone would hear me. I showed up at my house to access the damage and I saw a water bowl on my porch. I knew my Nikki was out there. I began to call her name and got no response. 2 months passed by after the storm and I still had no closure on Nikki's whereabouts. Everyone told me it was time to move on because the house was just such a mess she was probably buried under the debris. I had a dream Saturday, October 22, that I was sleeping in my old bed at the flooded house and I woke up and the sun was just shining so bright in my room and I saw little paw shadows under the door, I looked up and it was Nikki running through. That was a very powerful dream. I woke up the next morning and I told my mom about the dream and she told me to follow my instincts. I got online later that evening and I received an email from Petfinder that Nikki was rescued by the Pasado group. I contacted Nikki's foster Betsy Burke immediately. She told me Nikki was doing very well and we set up arrangements for Nikki to come back home to me.

I just want to thank the Pasado group for rescuing Nikki, you all are the one's who saved her life. If it wasn't for heroes like you I would not have Nikki right now. Nikki is a very strong and heroic cat. She has always been very special to everyone. Thank you so much for sending her home safely to me.

The Reunion of Domino the cat and his mom! Written by a PasadoRescuer. It shows how it took a village to make this happen!

"Domino was rescued in NO in September by Pasado's Safe Haven. The neighbor gave them a tip that a cat was in the house, phone number of the neighbor was written on his carrier and address etc.
When Domino got to the Pasado rescue barn in Raceland LA , Karyen Chu,a Pasado Rescuer from Washington, DC tracked him and finally got to speak to his owner. They had no way to keep him where they were living and could not return to the city and did not know what condition their home was in. Karyen arranged for long term foster care with a rescuer from the Redwood Animal Hospital (Redmond, WA) team, Carla Dimitirou. Another rescuer Jessie, and her husband drove Domino and a truck full of other animals to be fostered in WA state from LA.
Carla kept Domino at her house, had some medical exams done and nursed him back to health. She got in contact and kept in touch with the owners, sending them photos and talking on the phone.
They got back in their home and are working on fixing all of the damage. They were lucky, they did not flood, but lost a back wall due to the winds.
They were ready to get Domino home. Carla and I arranged to bring him back to Patti and Robert on December 4th. Thanks to a generous donation of air miles for one ticket by Redwood clients Tim and Kristen Rich, and anonymous donations of cash for the others and some of our own, we were able to escort Domino back and fly him with us. After all he had been though we just felt he could not be flown as cargo. Carla and I were ready to go back, meet Patti and bring Domino home.

We met Patti, her friend Caverly and Karyen from DC at the airport in Baton Rouge. The pictures tell the story. Domino melted in Patti's arms and we all did lots of crying. We made some real connections heard some amazing stories and made some new friends.
Enjoy the photos!!

When Heather Roux was rescued in New Orleans, we never knew if we'd ever find her mom. We never imagined that, once we returned home to the Pacific Northwest, that her mom had relocated here! Beloved pet, grateful, mom, and delighted rescuers were all able to meet for one whopping reunion!

Meet the Katrina animals who found homes with their rescuers!
