Ginger, the Miracle
Cat
by Deborah A, Cat Caretaker |
|
One day last month, Pasado’s
received a call from a concerned man about some orphaned kittens. The urgent
message went straight to Kitty City. Sean B., one of our amazing cat
volunteers, and I, immediately jumped into action.
As we arrived to the scene, we
feared the worst. Knowing that newborn kittens need to be fed every 2 hours; we
were very worried as we had no idea how long they had been without their mother.
|
 |
We were led to the kittens, 5
total, and to our surprise, we discovered they were just a few hours old. I
asked about the mom cat and was told that she was a stray and probable dead.
They said that there was a lot of blood and had no idea of what could have
happened to her. |
|
Call it intuition or maybe
something even more powerful… I could not get her out of my mind. It was almost
as if she was speaking to me and calling for my help. I insisted they take my
cell phone number and call me day or night if they should see her again, and I
would be happy to come and get her. I suggested to them that perhaps she was
just taking a break, maybe looking for some food or water, but they were pretty
sure she was gone. As we were leaving with the kittens, I felt a strong urge to
scan the property for her. There, under a broken down truck, I saw something.
Could it be her? Sean went to investigate. Sure enough, it was her! My heart
sank when I saw that her back legs and tail were covered with blood. |
 |
We rushed her to a local emergency
vet. She was in dire condition, weighing only 3.10 lbs. She also suffered from
anemia and could not stand or walk. The vet gave the kittens the once over and
released them to us to bottle-feed. One of the kittens did show of some kind of
trauma. Her tiny ears were ripped and the vet saw a puncture on her side.
Sadly she only lived 24 hours. We are so very thankful that at least she did
feel loved during her last hours. |
|
The vet called me an hour or so
after we left the mother to inform me that she was starting to deteriorate. He
asked what we wanted them to do. Through tears, I asked him to give her a
fighting chance. I would not authorize open CPR or euthanasia. Was she screaming
at me (in my head) to find her or only to die? In between phone calls with the
vet, I would send her back messages to ‘Fight! Fight!’ for her life. I told her
that I was not going to raise those kids by myself. After a blood transfusion,
she started to improve by leaps and bounds. In fact, the vet’s office started
to call her ‘Our Miracle Cat’. She was discharged 3 days later, with a weight of
6.1 lbs.! |
 |
Now she is safe and sound. She
is currently working on improving her health each day and will surely be
completely healed very soon. She is such a lovely kitty! She is only about a 1
½ years old - much too young to be having kittens of her own. Her story is still
just another example of why we all must be responsible and have our animals
spayed and or neutered. |
Ginger, as she
was named, is now looking for a forever, and safe home. She longs to be loved,
as she should have always been. Instead of wandering the streets looking for
enough to eat, clean water to drink, and a safe place to lie down at night, she
wants to be cuddled snuggly on a lap.
Please help us continue to help those
animals that are in need.
Donate here, sign up to
volunteer, or consider
fostering or even
adopting. Whichever the case may be, the animals give you big
thumbs up, (or is that paws up?!) and lots of kisses. |
