Can Denver See the Forrest For The Trees?

By Rita M

The city of Denver is playing a dangerous game with the life of a beloved pet.  What started as a small indiscretion has turned into a deadly serious situation for Forrest, companion to owner Chris McGahey.  Forrest dug out of his backyard and was picked up by Denver Animal Control for the second time in three months.  Now Forrest finds himself on death row fighting for his life.

Strike One:  Forrest is a pit bull, or so says the city of Denver.

Strike Two: Denver has one of the most draconian breed bans in the nation.

Strike Three: Despite pleas from McGahey and hundreds of concerned animal lovers around the world, Denver is set to kill Forrest for no other reason than looking like a particular breed.

We need to stop Denver before they tell Forrest and Chris “Three Strikes, You’re Out!”

By all accounts, Forrest has a sweet disposition, has not shown any aggression in the shelter and has never harmed anyone.  He has been charged, convicted and is now awaiting sentencing under Denver’s ordinance which bans ownership or possession of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier and/or any dog with a majority of physical traits of one or more of these breeds.

Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) punishes dogs for the vagaries of things like head shape or type of coat.  BSL does nothing to punish bad owners who are at the root of dogs who exhibit dangerous behavior.  Since the passing of Denver’s breed ban in 1989, hundreds of dogs have been needlessly killed and families who want to avoid having their pets share the same fate have been forced to move.

Now they have Forrest in their cross-hairs.  To read more about this story follow this link. To send your message of support for Forrest and McGahey, read on!

Save Forrest!

Let’s make sure that the city administration knows that Forrest’s story will not get buried under the Democratic Convention news coming out of Denver this week.  Use the talking points below and send your message of support for Forrest, his owner and all the pitties in Denver.

To: Mayor John Hickenlooper, Denver CO

  • Forrest the dog deserves to live and be reunited with his owner Chris McGahey immediately

  • BSL is a failed experiment and it’s time Denver gets out of the business of killing innocent animals

  • Pit bulls are not inherently dangerous. The people who abuse and neglect them should be the target of dangerous dog legislation.

  • Denver does not need this negative attention.  As long as your city insists on killing animals because they look a certain way,  you'll always be viewed as backward, cruel and out of step with the mainstream
